Market Structure in the SMC (Smart Money Concepts) framework tracks trend through two events: a Break of Structure (BOS) and a Change of Character (CHoCH). A BOS confirms the existing trend is continuing; a CHoCH signals the structure may be reversing. Together they replace the need to guess at trend direction — the market's own price action labels the bias. On TradingView, free scripts such as the LuxAlgo Market Structure indicator automate the labeling so you can apply the framework without manually marking every swing.
1. Learn the two events: BOS vs CHoCH
In an uptrend, each new higher high is a Break of Structure (BOS) — price has cleared the prior swing high, confirming the trend is intact. A BOS is a continuation signal: the trend is healthy, and pullbacks are re-entry opportunities.
A Change of Character (CHoCH) is the opposite: in an uptrend, a CHoCH prints when price breaks below the most recent swing low — the first structural evidence that the market may be shifting from bullish to bearish. A single CHoCH is a warning; confirmation comes from a second CHoCH or a failed attempt to reclaim the prior swing high.
2. Establish your bias from the higher timeframe
Read market structure on a timeframe one or two levels above your entry chart. If you trade entries on the 15m, read BOS/CHoCH on the 1h or 4h. If the 4h is printing consistent BOS events (each new high confirmed), the trend is bullish on the timeframe that matters for your trade.
Only trade in the direction of the higher-timeframe structure. In a 4h uptrend (BOS sequence intact), look for long entries on pullbacks using your lower-timeframe tools. Do not take short signals on the 15m when the 4h structure has not printed a CHoCH.
3. Use BOS as confirmation, not entry
A BOS candle is not an entry signal — it is a confirmation that the trend has re-asserted. Chasing the BOS bar often means entering after the bulk of the move. Instead, wait for the subsequent pullback: after a BOS, price frequently returns to the zone of the broken swing high (now acting as support) or to a nearby order block before continuing.
Enter on the pullback with a stop below the order block or the swing that defined the BOS. That gives you a location-anchored entry rather than chasing a candle.
4. Act on CHoCH with confirmation, not immediately
A single CHoCH is a structural warning, not a reversal trade trigger. In a strong trend, brief CHoCH events are common as the market shakes out weak hands before continuing. The higher-quality setup is: first CHoCH prints → watch for price to attempt to reclaim the prior high → if it fails and prints a second CHoCH or breaks a key order block, that is the reversal confirmation.
On lower timeframes (5m–15m), false CHoCH events in ongoing trends are frequent. Apply the same multi-confirmation rule: one event is a caution flag; two events with failed reclaim is a tradeable signal.
5. Combine with order blocks for entry precision
Market Structure on its own defines direction; it does not give precise entries. After a BOS confirms the uptrend, locate the order block — the last bearish candle before the impulsive move that created the BOS — as the re-entry zone on pullbacks. That zone is where institutional orders were placed and where price tends to find support on retests.
The combination of higher-timeframe BOS (trend bias) + lower-timeframe order block pullback (entry location) + momentum confirmation on entry (RSI oversold cross or WaveTrend oversold) is the full structure trade many SMC traders use.
- Entering on the BOS candle itself instead of waiting for the pullback — chasing the breakout bar means a wide stop and poor risk-to-reward.
- Treating the first CHoCH as a confirmed reversal and immediately shorting — single CHoCH events are frequent in strong trends; wait for multi-event confirmation.
- Reading BOS/CHoCH only on the entry timeframe without a higher-timeframe bias — a 5m CHoCH inside a 4h uptrend is a pullback, not a reversal.
- Confusing BOS (trend continuation) with CHoCH (structural shift) — the direction of the trade depends entirely on correctly identifying which event printed.
- Using a script without checking its repaint settings — some community Market Structure scripts repaint BOS/CHoCH labels as new bars arrive; confirm the script labels on closed bars only.
